Sleep Talking

The other night I was talking in my sleep.

The funny thing was that it kept happening (at least three times) right as I was falling asleep, so it kept waking me up.

It was the evening after dissection class which means crazy dreams anyway.

Just real quick, here are the three words that woke me up.

Wow!

Interesting!

and

Diaphragm!

The interesting diaphragm

Spotlights

The elder's quorum in my ward has weekly spotlights.

This means that when we first came into the ward we wrote down things that no one really knows about us, and each week they read one or two, and everyone tries to guess who it is they are talking about.

I was spotlighted this week. Little did I know that I would have to prove to everyone that what I said was true... :)

Just real quick here are some fun things about me that people don't know:

1. Sometimes when people talk to me I think about the muscles that are moving their mouth.

2. I know how to do shadow puppets. (This they needed proof)

3. I have a fake laugh that makes other people laugh.

4. I have really outrageous and funny dreams. ("oh, really?" they asked. "Yes, I dreamed my arms were shrinking last night," I replied.) Almost thrice weekly.

I can't remember what I put for the fifth one, but I am sure it was witty, unique, and awesome.

Middle of the Night Notes

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and really needed to write something important down?

That used to happen to me all the time. I used to keep a stack of post-it notes next to my bed to be ready when I remembered something important.

Just real quick, here is one of those middle of the night notes.
I think I was really tired. And yet I wonder, who is Blabalata?

You know you are writing an 8 page research paper

When you take a nap before class and dream that your arm is being attacked by Retinoic Acid and Cyp26b1 genes are deactivating the Retinoic Acid that is trying to make the bones in your arm grow shorter.

That happened to me during my quick nap. I fell asleep after spending about an hour researching bone/limb development.

Fear not. My limbs are normal size and not shorter.

Ideal Sister

In honor of my sister Liz:

Dear porches,
Thanks for being the perfect place for really important and great conversations. Also, thanks for getting cold when its time to come in.

Dear milk,
Thanks for making it possible to eat cereal. I missed you for awhile.

Dear midterms,
Thank you for making it impossible for me to procrastinate learning fourteen weeks of material 'til the fourteenth week.

Thanks for being you.

Dear Liz,
Thanks for being a wonderful sister, ridiculously good-looking, and an awesome example/person.

Sincerely,
James

Overheard

A girl was talking to someone (I heard this in passing and I thought it was funny):

"You guys must be miserable because we are having an awesome time over here."

Because that logically makes sense...

The Kid James

Every so often I read my childhood journal and laugh at some of my entries. I decided to to a series of blogs from the entries of the journal of kid James.

Just real quick, here is my entry for July 8th, 2002 Monday (I was 13):

"Today was fun. I had violin and read. Thats all. Pretty Pathetic Huh?.
Sincerely,
James Marble"

Or this one from February 24th, 2003 Monday (I was 14 then, but I do not remember being this negative...)

"Today was the first day of school this week and it was kind of boring. First I had Art and we watched a dumb video about Vincent van Gogh. Second I had History and we had a substitute teacher, I don't like having subs because they don't do things right (How do I know they are doing it wrong?). In third period I also had a sub so it was not fun. Fourth period I had Math and got homework, and I don't like homework. After Math I went to lunch and had a good time (I'm sure it was a thrilling adventure in the Jr. High lunch room). Sixth period, reading is a way easy class and it wasn't that bad today (finally something that isn't "that bad"). Peer support we have a test tomorrow. Health was pratty [sic] fun we got our midterms today and mine aren't that bad...."

I promise I'm not that negative now...

For example, Wednesday, April 2nd, 2003:
"...I didn't practice today, I am very bad hahaha....I'm falling asleep I can't keep my eyes open so goodnight.
Sincerely,
The best thing since toliet [sic] paper,
James Marble"

That is just three days in the life of kid James. Check back for more entries.

Do you know CPR?

I want to be a doctor when I grow up. I want to save lives, heal hurts, and prescribe protection. I want people to live.

This is why this clip gives me ample amounts of anxiety.

If ever you get an opportunity to save a life please do so, act fast, and do not let people die. Humans are worth saving.

If you do not want or wish to learn CPR, just real quick, you can learn hands-only CPR.

Thanks.

Fluffy fiction to cultured cadavers

I read a lot of fiction. I love me a good book about magic, wizards, elves, sword fights, mythical lands, awesome powers, and powerful imaginations.

My mom told me I like them a little too much.

"You should read a book that doesn't take you away from the world," she advised.

So I chose a book about dead bodies.

I went to the library and told them my dilemma. The librarian gave me a list of a few books of good literature. One book was "Stiff: the curious life of human cadavers" by Mary Roach.

It is about all the things cadavers (Dead bodies donated to science) are used for.

Surprisingly it is very funny.

Just Real Quick, here is a passage, about embalming, that I read at midnight one night and laughed really hard.

"Theo is feeling around on Mr. Blank's neck. 'We're in search of the carotid artery,' he announces. He cuts a short lengthwise slit in the man's neck. Because no blood flows, it is easy to watch, easy to think of the action as simply something a man does on his job, like cutting roofing material or slicing foam core, rather than what it would more normally be: murder."

It is a really good book and I just think human's are neat.

I promise you I'm not a creep.

Flexor Digitorum Profundus

My favorite muscle in the body is the Flexor Digitorum Profundus.

Not only does it help me move my fingers:
But it also sounds like a Harry Potter spell.

Zion

So there is something about the word Zion that makes me really excited. We are taught and we believe that Zion is a place of unity, where every one works together for a common cause in building the kingdom of God, as well as blessing all God's children.

I think of working together. Service. Happiness. Protection. People and Purpose (two things that as a blue personality I love and live for.)

Just real quick take a look at this video. It is one of my favorite to watch and motivate me to have faith and hope for the future.

A song you just have to hear

So I may be cheating, but I was reading one of the four blogs I read and it was so unique and great that just real quick I want you to take a look at it and listen to the song.

Death, Taxes, and Finals

Can I just say, real quick, that for the life of a college student there is no escaping Death, Taxes, AND Finals.

The bane of my existence.

Ninja Domination

We had a ward party tonight and it was one of the best activities I have had in a long time.

There were free snow cones, mike and ikes, and did I mention swedish fish? What could be better than that? Normally I would say nothing, but we also played around ten or fifteen games of Ninja Domination. People whah-ing, hiyaw-ing and destruction all over the place it was so intense.

Oh, and did I mention Ninja Domination is one of my all time favorite games in the world. I get so into it and am fairly good.

In my last ward I got second place in a Ninja Domination tournament and have the numb chucks to prove it.

Tonight I won every round.

Didn't see that one coming did you?....Neither did they.

Toilet Paper Dodge ball

Just real quick, here is a fun game to play.

We played it at Family Home Evening. It is called Toilet Paper Dodge Ball. Just get a bunch of rolls of toilet paper, divide into teams and let 'em loose.

Try not to get hit.

If you catch it you can't let any of the toilet paper touch the ground.

O, negative

I am working as a phlebotomist and donor processor at a plasma center at the moment, and just real quick, here is a great story of my first traumatizing experience.

I went out to the floor to do a set up and stick to help the phlebotomists the other day. (They were backed up.) I went out and did a great set up and stick, then someone asked me to do their stick, I went over and did it and he started flowing fantastically. I documented everything and set the chart down and his machine starts beeping, "No Flow." Beep....Beep. Ok, okay. I take the tape off the needle and push the needle in a little farther and he starts flowing fantastically again. I wait a second and then reach over to grab some new tape.

As I do so I accidentally pull the needle out of his arm and blood starts flowing everywhere! Holy cow! One hand has the needle and I'm holding it away from anyone, and my other is putting pressure on his arm. I can't reach the gauze pads or the machine, and I don't know what to do.

I call for help, and get it all taken care of and get a new needle and re-stick him in the other arm.

In the meantime blood has pooled all over the floor, my shoes, and is all over my lab coat.

Oops, sorry mister.

Opposable

Just real quick, here is a fun experiment:

Without using your any of your other digits, try to touch your pinky with your pointer finger on the same hand. It is really hard and I can't do it.

Now try it with the help of your opposable thumbs. It works that way.

I love being human.

One word at a time

In church the other week, (it was a testimony meeting), a brother went up to the front to share a scripture that he loved. He then began to read carefully each word of the scripture as he struggled to read it.

It was unique to see him work his way through the verses and then say, "I really know thats true."

I have since started reading my scriptures one word at a time and occasionally out loud.
Just Real Quick, Try reading them from the perspective of the prophets who wrote them, and tell the stories.
